Another archive photo - I came across this bandit casing out one of the sailboats in the
South Harbour on a November day in 2012.

Diversity - Part 2

Saturday's Celebration of Cultural Diversity was very well attended, both by the
number of people there, and the number of cultures represented.

The young people here represented Japan, just one of the many countries : Hungary,
Thailand, France, Laos, China, Mexico, Austria, El Salvador, and a good few more.
As part of an immigrant family myself - Class of '55 - it's very nice to see
that Powell River chooses to do this kind of celebration.

Diversity - Part 1

The 6th annual Celebration of Cultural Diversity was held at the Rec Complex
yesterday, with a good number of cultures represented, as the young lady here, manning
the Mexican food booth, and interesting things to see, as in these drums, waiting
for - what else - the drumming exhibition.

But the best part is the food! And I can personally attest to the Austrian Almond Cake,
along with a liberal portion of whipped cream. Delicious!

Pacific Loon

The Common Loon is very "common" in our area, both summer and winter, while the Pacific Loon
is a winter only bird, and then in much smaller numbers. They are identified by the "scaley"
pattern on the back and by the beak, which is much slimmer at the base. While I
see a few every winter, this overcast day was the only time I've managed to
grab a few shoots with the camera.

(Compare it to the photos of the Common Loon posted earlier this month.)

Sunset : November 24

We've not had much good luck with the weather in the last while, so it was nice to see some sun
yesterday afternoon, and even nicer to see some colour as the sun went down,
even if it was short-lived.

Ceramic Christmas tree ornaments at the Dwight Hall Craft Fair yesterday. These and many other items by
local artisans can still be browsed through and purchased today, but only between 10am and 3pm.

The Winter Forecast

"Winter will be colder than normal, with above-normal precipitation and snowfall.
The coldest periods will be in early and mid- to late December and
mid- to late January, with the snowiest periods in early and
mid-December and mid-January."
- The Old Farmer's Almanac

The photo is dated January 5, 2016, the first snow in Westview last winter.

Horned Grebe

Horned Gebes are winter-only residents here, migrating in from the interior, and from October
till early spring they are very common off the Seawalk. They are a very curious bird, and will often
come in close to shore to check out the photographer.

"Click!"

This River Otter at the South Harbour heard the click of my camera's shutter, but couldn't
place the sound as coming from above, the ramp going down to floats 7-11.

A Dark Wood

"Midway this way of life we're bound upon,
I woke to find myself in a dark wood,
Where the right road was wholly lost and gone."  - Dante Alighieri

Common Loon in Winter

The Common Loon's winter colours are basically grey and white, but for those red eyes. In winter it is virtually impossible
to walk the Seawalk and not see a loon offshore. These were taken from the Westview wharf, and I'll be hard-pressed to improve on them.

A Touch of Floral Colour

With all the dark and gloomy days, and near record rain in October, it's been
difficult to find some floral colour. This tuberous Begonia, sheltered from
the weather, is a bright exception.
