Search and Rescue

Sitting at the lip of the Cormorant's bay.
One of the SAR CH-149 Cormorants from Comox was practicing maneuvers with our local CCGS Cape Caution
one day last week. I watched them winch down 3 SAR personnel, from the Cormorant to the deck of the
Caution, not an easy thing to do in the wash from that propeller.

Hanging by a thread.
Note that he - or she - is wearing a full wetsuit,. Even aside from maybe going in the chuck, that's a lot of
wet thrown up by the Cormorant.

Still hanging, but ...
And I will readily admit that whoever it is on the end of that cable, they have more nerve than I do.

,,, getting closer.
The Caution has a 14' beam, which is not an overly large target.

And the eagle has landed!

SAR "Buffalo"

While one might think this is a shot of a Search and Rescue "Buffalo" in all the recent smoke we've been dealing
with, these were actually taken 2 weeks ago, before the smoke hit us, and that's just a normal cloud this
plane is breaking through.

These planes are regulars here, they come over from Comox on there practice runs. They are big and they are noisy.

CCGS Cape Kuper

The Cape Kuper (pronounced Cooper) - she's her as a relief boat, as our locally stationed
Cape Caution is at the Coast Guard yard at Patricia Bay for her yearly overhaul. Always nice to
see Coast Guard red out on the water on a sunny day.
Taken just before our latest weather event.

Search and Rescue - 2

A CH-149 Cormorant stationed at Comox with what is now the 442 Transport and Rescue
Squadron. They fly over Westview regularly, and with their noise are hard to miss.

Coast Guard

Denis Taylor, Officer in Charge at the local Coast Guard station, guides the
CCGS Cape Caution to her berth in the South Harbour.
Having been pulled out of the water myself in the days before there were
SAR Lifeboats at Powell River, I have a deep appreciation of the need for a
Coast Guard presence here.
