At Haslam Lake

One from the archives, to keep my hand in : a photo of the jetty at Haslam Lake, where our local water supply
intake is. The photo is dated February 2011, long before the road was blocked off, and you could still drive in.

The Salish Orca

The new Salish Orca, her first time at Westview. She won't be in service till the end of March, the 30th is
the day. Yesterday she practiced berthing at Earl's Cove and Saltery Bay, today she's here, and tomorrow
checking out the berth at Little River. She does take a pretty photo.

Eye In The Sky

With the word "Surveillance" on her side there isn't much doubt as to her purpose. She is loaded with much
electronic equipment, and flies up and down our coast as part of Transport Canada’s National Aerial
Surveillance Program, looking for pollution caused by marine shipping on our waters. A de Havilland
Dash 8, she flew by once again last Saturday morning.

The Glacier - A Closer View

Last month I posted a photo of the Comox Glacier as seen from our side of Georgia Strait. The folks in Courtenay get
a much closer view. This is the Glacier as seen from Marsden Road on the west side of Courtenay, in a photo from
the archives, dated 6 years ago this month. Magnificent.

Once Again ....

... our ferry service was disrupted as the Queen of Burnaby was out of service last week, replaced by the smaller
pictured Island Sky.The new Salish Orca is scheduled to begin service starting March or April, and
hopefully that will be the end to these disruptions. These are archives photos, taken on one
of the several previous disruptions over the last few years, with the photo below
including Texada Island's Queen of the North.

The latest news yesterday has the Burnaby sold to an unknown bidder, with auction bids opening at $400,000,
though I hope the next owner has better luck than we've had with that boat.

A Walk In The Park

Willingdon Beach, the jewel in our crown, the hub of this great community.
Many is the event, big and small, held here every year.

Going Fishing?

From the archives : an oarsman out on the water on an overcast February day in 2013.
It wouldn't be my choice, but we each get our pleasures in our own way.

The Covered Bridge

The one behind the playing field on Craig Road. To be totally honest, the few times I have been here
I have never had the time to explore where the other side of that trail goes.

Going Fishing

February 1st - leaving the South Harbour and heading north, trailing his wake behind him.

Keeping Watch

A female Common Merganser, mostly keeping watch on that fool with the camera
trying not to fall down the bank while getting closer for a better shot!

CCGS Cape Kuper

The Cape Kuper (pronounced Cooper) - she's her as a relief boat, as our locally stationed
Cape Caution is at the Coast Guard yard at Patricia Bay for her yearly overhaul. Always nice to
see Coast Guard red out on the water on a sunny day.
Taken just before our latest weather event.

Grey Skies

There is no way that I'm a fan of winter, but I will - grudgingly - admit it makes a pretty picture.
That's Texada Island, above, in behind those treetops, and Harwood Island, below, a short hour later on Friday afternoon.

Forager

It's hard to make a living as a forager when your meal is under a snow blanket. This Fox Sparrow
may be going hungry for a few days.

Running Late

Not a very nice day for a postie, but that yellow poncho made such a nice target for my lens
I couldn't resist. And while he was a tad behind schedule, the mail did make it through Friday.
Over 30cm of snow has dropped on us - the most I've seen in some years.

Snow!

We've had a few dustings of snow this winter, but this is the first this season with any depth to to it.

Grief Point Park

For all the benches they keep adding to the park, I have yet to see even one
occupied, which is a shame, as the view towards Texada Island is terrific.

The Lighthouse

We don't have many lighthouses in Powell River, in fact I think this may be the only
one, and it adorns the 10th hole at Putters Minigolf.

It's A Given ...

... I see Bald Eagles everywhere, except on the day that I carry the long lens
and go looking for them! This is one of the "alternate reality" ones at Marine Traders.
