Man At Work

The man here is working on the end of the ramp of a barge/tug combo making its way into the Catalyst mill harbour
for a pick-up and delivery. He's one of the deckhands on the Stormaway V, a tug working out of Campbell River.
The photos are a backwards sequence.

It's a much better job in the summer. These raw cold, wet and windy days we've been having are not great days
to be working on the water. The snaps were taken Sunday.

End Of The Day?

Tying up his dozer boat and heading to shore in those orange Stihl caulk boots. Though I
have never understood why "caulk" is pronounced "cork", or is it
that "cork" is spelled "caulk"?

Man At Work - Take 2

Fueling up his Cat excavator (from a tank on his truck, you don't just drive those into the service station) at 7:30am,
before the paying work started at 8. Three excavators are working at the lot below the
School Board offices on Ontario St. Rumour is more houses going in.

I keep telling myself that, now I'm retired, it's great I don't have to get up early in the morning,
but I still seem to be getting up early in the morning, if just to take photos.

I resisted the temptation to title this "The Man With The Dragon Tattoo". There's a large
"Oriental Wizard Riding Dragon" on his left arm.

Man At Work

I take a lot of tugboat photos, and I often think it would have been nice to have
spent my working life on the water. But then I'm pretty sure that to this
fellow, crawling out of the below deck engine room of the J.R.W.,
it's just a job.

These are archive photos of a Seaspan worker, from when we still had Seaspan
tugs working out of our harbour. They've been gone 2 years.

At The New Log Dump

There has been a new log dump built inside the Mill harbour, operating now for a
month or two. The 1st photo (of 8) shows a loaded truck coming down the Mill road.

Goat Lake Forest Product's shiny new Kenworth at the ramp, 1 of 2 I saw here.

No hoist, the load gets pushed off with a Cat 966D.

And into the water it goes.

Unhook the rear trailer, lift it, and load onto the front end.

And away it goes, another load finished.

Back up the Mill road.

And the boom boat gets the job of sorting the bundles.
It's all fairly small, straight wood. I was told they were hauling from the Bliss Landing
area, but that's not confirmed. Lots of it, I watched 3 trucks come and go
in a relatively short time.

Supervising

Fraser River Pile and Dredge recently spent a morning dredging out the
mill pond at the log dump. Here we have a worker, hands busy, and a
supervisor, hands in pockets. 'Twas ever thus.

The Life Of A Boat Owner

Non-stop maintenance.

Though he did pause to give me a shot of that tee-shirt.
