CAT

The operator of this CAT left his machine at the beach when he finished his shift.

(I certainly don't remember these types of toys when I was young, though it is some time ago
since I was young.)

A New Addition ...

... to our waterfront. This was done by Nanaimo carver Dan Richie for the 2016
Logger Sports, so the city's had our Blackbeard tucked away somewhere
for some time.

Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!

I don't want to sound overly excited, but when THE mall in our little town puts up new
Christmas displays - rather than the ones they've used for eons of years - it's NEWS!

On A Sunday Morning

This archive photo of 3 lads out on the water on a Sunday morning has been one of my favourites for a good while.
That may be because it reminds me of the days of my long-gone youth, when we did this on the St.Lawrence
River, among the Thousand Islands. Taken in early autumn, so just slightly out of season, and so
long ago that these teens are now grown men.

Like A Mill Pond

I don't know why - and there's probably a rational explanation - but whenever we have
fog, the waters of Malaspina Strait are virtually ripple-less, or as the saying goes,
"it's like a mill pond out there".  As demonstrated by this shot of the dolphin
off the Westview Wharf, in the recent pea-soup.

On The Seawalk 2

While taking yesterday's photos I noted that this bench, which has been MIA for some time, has been redone
and put back in place. It's the only bench on the length of the Seawalk with any character, the rest
are the usual slatted style, and is meant to represent Sliammon First Nation's part in the local area
and in the building of the Seawalk.  I particularly like the centre whorl, but then I have a
failing for Coast Salish design.
You can see it in context in Photo 2 of yesterday's post, on the right.

Autumn Leaves

Autumn Leaves

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With the inimitable voice of Edith Piaf, enough to make a man maudlin.
Or is it just the season.

Rocky Mountain Raspberry

I do this once every summer. Take the photo that is, my waistline is ample testimony
to the fact that I eat one of these rather too often. My favourite flavour.
At Putters, of course.

Blackberry Season

Our Blackberry Festival is on this week, the berries are out in abundance. And as
any experienced picker knows, if you own an old pair of coveralls, that's
what you wear to get into those hard-to-reach spots where the best berries are.

Curious George

On the Seawalk yesterday with my gear when this little guy just had to stop and check me out.
I can't believe something this cute has never seen a camera before, so I assumed it was
posing for a photo. I obliged.

Another Man At Work

Many years ago - almost 50, sad to say - I took a basic course in surveying, but these days with all that
electronic equipment it's a whole different ball game.

And speaking of ball games - how's that for a segue -  nice to see the BC Lions hat. I actually prefer baseball,
but the Blue Jays this year are, how shall we put it ...disappointing.

Skippy

To quote that well-know fellow to the south of us, "Sad, so sad!", but I can't get Skippy in Canada anymore!
I stocked up at the time - a few more than you see here - but I've just finished the
last of my favourite peanut butter.
It was a long and happy relationship, but they've left me in the lurch. Sad, so sad.

Bad Hair Day

Mine looks the same some mornings.

Toque

It is definitely spring - someone doesn't need his toque anymore.

Chainsaw Grizzly

I've been lucky enough to have seen a handful of the real thing, but you can get a lot closer to this one!
This is the one on the topside of the BC Ferries lot, and quite well done. The signage says it was
carved for the PR Forestry Museum by chainsaw carver Mike Brown in 2002.

The Hall of Fame

I haven't been getting out, not least the lousy weather, so it's indoor photos today. It's
difficult taking photos in a hallway, but where else would I hang my "Hall of Fame".
To get an idea of size, the Snowy Owl is a 17"x22" print. It's not a permanent
exibition, the photos get rotated out slowly, and occasionally I change themes - at
one point it was all tugboat photos, at another all floral.

Before it's asked, yes, I do my own prints. An Epson Stylus Pro 3880 does a great job,
and, over time, is less expensive than a commercial printer, and much more convenient.

Anyone with an abacus handy will have noted there are 56 photos in 4 different sizes.
These bottom five 8½ x 11's are BC Bike Race portraits.
